"El Baile de los 41," or "The Dance of the 41,” is the name of a famous gay party held in Mexico City in 1901. The party was raided by the police, where they found the men dancing together, 19 of whom were dressed as women. The men represented the upper echelons of Mexican society, and it caused a scandal. The names of the men were printed in the newspaper, their lives and reputations ruined, and the majority of them sent to prison to work hard labor. The notoriety of the event was such that the number 41 came to be associated with bad luck in Mexico, so that many buildings have no 41st floor, and no army battalion is called 41. The number is synonymous with homosexuality in popular Mexican culture. Here, I painted a scene from the party, in which the men enjoy a beautiful evening, of happiness, friendship, and love, before their lives are ruined forever, at the “Dance of the 41.”Each print is made with high-quality archival ink on premium presentation paper for inks and includes on the back the Official stamp of the Felix d'Eon studio in Mexico.
